Why does Creatine have a bad rep? Myths – debunked

Why does Creatine have a bad rep? Myths – debunked

Creatine has been around as a mainstream supplement since the 90’s, but as a millennial I’ve definitely had some preconceptions around adding it to my daily routine. Will I become an overnight body builder? Will my hair drop out? Is Creatine even legal? Let me assure you with the truth behind these rumours…

Fear of hair loss was a real concern to me, as GI Jane or Britney Spears (during her 2007 ‘crisis’), are not really my vibe. The reality is that this rumour evolved from a 2009 study on Rugby players, and suggested a possible minor increase in DHT (a hormone linked to hair loss). As this study was never successfully replicated and larger studies have shown no direct link between creatine and hair loss, your locks should stay firmly put.

So, all good for the hair, but will I become the incredible hulk overnight? Again, sadly the answer is no. While this may be some people's goal, the reality is that gaining muscle is pretty hard. Creatine can help, but muscle gain only comes with a combination of consistency, a healthy diet and pushing to the point of failure during your workouts. What Creatine will do, is give you the energy to push harder and get those extra reps in! Helping you come closer to achieving your fitness goals.

But I also heard a lot of people saying that Creatine is some kind of illegal substance- like steroids, but this is another complete myth. Creatine is actually a naturally occurring compound in the body, derived from 3 amino acids, and is present in the muscles and the brain, supplying both organs, with extra energy.

So now you know – Creatine is completely safe to use and can have great results on both your mental and physical health, when used consistently and as part of a healthy lifestyle. You can take it anytime, anywhere- you won’t get stopped at the airport, I promise, but best to keep it in its original packaging, just to be on the safe side ;)
